Wisdom Teeth Extraction
Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to come through, typically emerging between the ages of 16 and 26. Most people have four wisdom teeth, though some people have fewer, or teeth that never fully form.
Wisdom tooth issues are one of the more common problems we see. When there isn’t enough room for these teeth to come through properly, pressure and pain can build as they try to erupt, sometimes leading to gum inflammation, difficulty brushing the area properly, and a greater risk of decay or infection over time.
While you wait to be assessed, a few simple habits can help manage discomfort:
- Brush your teeth thoroughly, including around the erupting tooth
- Rinse with a mouthwash recommended by your dentist if you notice mild irritation
- Avoid hard foods that could aggravate the area
- Use a teething gel for sore gums if needed
Where extraction is needed, it can be carried out under local anaesthetic for more straightforward cases, or under general anaesthetic in hospital for more involved procedures, such as removing all four wisdom teeth at once. At B Dental, we can help manage your pain in the meantime and refer you to a trusted specialist for the extraction itself, so you’re in experienced hands throughout.
If you think your wisdom teeth are coming through and you’re not sure whether they need attention, call B Dental on (03) 9842 2658 for advice.
