Inlay & Onlay
Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations used when a tooth has too much damage for a standard filling, but not enough to need a full crown. They offer a way to restore strength to the tooth while preserving more of your natural tooth structure than a crown would.
Both are made to fit precisely onto the damaged area of the tooth, but they cover different amounts of the tooth’s surface:
- An inlay fits within the grooves on the biting surface of the tooth.
- An onlay extends further, covering one or more of the tooth’s cusps (the raised points on the biting surface).
Inlays and onlays can offer more strength and durability than a standard filling for a larger area of damage, while still preserving more of your natural tooth than a full crown would require.
Whether an inlay, onlay, filling or crown is the right fit for your tooth depends on the extent of the damage. Your dentist at B Dental can advise you on the best option after an examination.
