Stained & Discoloured Teeth
Stained or discoloured teeth are teeth that naturally have a yellow or grey hue, surface imperfections, or surface stains.
- External stains — often superficial, and commonly caused by highly pigmented food, drinks or tobacco smoke.
- Internal discolouration — teeth may grow with a naturally yellow or grey hue that becomes more intense with time and ageing; certain antibiotics taken during tooth development can also be a cause.
- Surface imperfections — these may be congenital, such as molar-incisor hypomineralisation or fluorosis.
- Restorations — filling surfaces may deteriorate over time; older crowns and veneers may use porcelain that is less aesthetic than today's; and teeth that have had root canal treatment are at risk of darkening.
External staining can be minimised by avoiding or reducing highly pigmented food and drink and tobacco products, and by thoroughly cleaning your teeth at home with twice-daily brushing and flossing.
Dental treatments include cleaning and polishing, chemical whitening (sometimes referred to as bleaching), microabrasion techniques, replacement of old fillings, and crowns or veneers that cover the stains or discolouration.
