Bad Breath (Halitosis)

Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is the presence of a noticeably unpleasant smelling breath odour. In people with halitosis, in approximately 90% of cases it comes from inside the mouth. Halitosis arises from bacteria on the teeth and gums, and on the tongue and other areas of the mouth. These bacteria produce volatile sulphur compounds (VSC), which is the chemical smell detected in halitosis. Food residues add to the severity of halitosis.

  • Poor oral hygiene — plaque on teeth and in decay cavities.
  • Active gum or periodontal disease.
  • A bacterial coating on the tongue.
  • Dentures — older acrylic (plastic) dentures in particular are more prone to causing halitosis.
  • Dry mouth, which may be due to the natural daily cyclic variation, certain medications, or ageing.
  • Medical disorders such as diabetes, autoimmune disease, sinus disease or gastrointestinal conditions.
  • Smoking and alcohol.
  • Foods such as onions and garlic.

Three steps to fresher breath:

  • Thoroughly remove plaque using a toothbrush, floss and tongue scrapers. Mouthwashes may mask halitosis only temporarily.
  • Increase saliva flow by drinking plenty of water, and limit coffee, alcohol and smoking.
  • See your dentist for professional cleaning and management of any gum or periodontal disease, and to diagnose whether the halitosis may be coming from somewhere other than the mouth.

Halitosis may be an indication of underlying dental problems. Consult your dentist to rule out dental decay or periodontal disease — which could ultimately result in tooth loss — or to determine whether there is an underlying medical condition.

Some people are anxious about their breath and fearful of social interaction. For your sake and that of the people you meet, please book in your dental appointment today.
